ADHD Insight: A Symptom Tracking App For Caregivers

Readying A Promising Functional Prototype For Production

ADHD Insight was a tool designed for parents to track and monitor their child's ADHD-related behaviors and symptoms. It was created as a companion app for EndeavorRx, a prescription video game treatment for pediatric ADHD.

After a beta iOS app saw moderate success, our product team was tasked with building on the existing concept and readying it to deploy on iOS and Android platforms.

Validating The Need

Through focus groups, interviews, and consumer insights research the team discovered that parents lack a way to effectively track and monitor their child’s behaviors and ADHD symptoms. Some parents even use notebooks or spreadsheets to accomplish this task.

I worked with a product manager and research partner to develop user personas to capture some of the goals, needs, behaviors, and demographics of the target audience.

Feedback From Prototypes Bolstered Confidence In The Solution

After working with the product manager to establish user stories and requirements, I created visual assets that would aid in gaining stakeholder alignment as well as be used to test our concepts with users.

I used AxureRP to build user flows and fully interactive prototypes.

Overall, parents liked the app and could see themselves using it in their daily lives.

Some positive findings included:

  • 5 out of 7 participants asked when the app would be released.

  • 7/7 participants successfully completed all of the apps key workflows

  • 6/7 participants expressed appreciation for the ability to select their child’s superpower during onboarding

“It’s great ‘cause it shows you the trend. OK, we have great days on Tuesdays and Wednesdays, and Sundays are pretty great, but obviously, towards the end of the week, it gets pretty hairy. You know, you get to see some trends.”

We also received feedback and insights that allowed us to improve upon the original design:

  • 6 out of 7 participants had trouble finding or could not find where to edit which behaviors they are tracking

  • 4 out of 7 participants originally thought the “More” icon meant viewing data in a list of some kind

  • Parents expressed an interest in formalizing when to reward their child for positive behavior through the app

These learnings and more were either integrated into the final designs or added to the product backlog.

Applying A New Brand Identity & Building A Design System

I worked with our branding agency to translate our corporate brand into a UI style that could be applied to web and mobile interfaces and partnered with engineering to create a component-based design system.

Outcomes Didn’t Match Expectations, Leading To Valuable Lessons

Upon the app's launch, we employed the Countly analytics platform to observe user behavior, paving the way for iterative enhancements intended to foster the habit of daily tracking.

Lessons Learned:

  1. True MVP Approach: The project underscored the value of a genuine MVP strategy. Initial feature overload hindered adaptability based on user insights.

  2. User Intentions vs. Behavior: Despite promising feedback during discovery, we observed that busy parents were inconsistent with daily tracking, revealing a gap between intent and action.

  3. Beyond Data Visualization: We soon learned that merely tracking medications and symptoms proved less impactful than initially envisioned. Algorithms for discerning subtle trends within the data could have enhanced user insights.

Learnings from ADHD Insight directly informed the direction of our more streamlined companion app for EndeavorRx; EndeavorRx Insight.
